Description:

Unknown fruit hard, slightly waxy.

Habitat:

Upland hardwood forest in southern VA mountains.

This cool find is actually a gall. It is created by a tiny type of wasp. The wasp lays an egg on a leaf (most likely oak for this particular gall) and the larva causes the leaf to produce a protective "house" around it until it emerges as an adult wasp. This looks a lot like a gall from Genus Amphibolips: http://bugguide.net/node/view/39773/bgpage
