they do get well fed at my backyard habitat...lots of seeds and water for them. yeah you are right...lots of them hanging out in my backyard all the time...also they help bring in other birds like the white wing doves, cardinals, blue jays and also carolina wren (just love their songs).
No, leave it as it is. we have up to 200 of these living around our garden and most are scruffy, dull looking things. Yours are probably just getting into their plumage for next year so bright new feathers.
Malcolm...yes, we have bright sunshine today and it is very nice...I could play the brightness though
I think the bright sun is playing tricks with the one on the right, it looks too bright! Anyway, they are both females.
