Field Notes

Description:

Similar to a curlew but smaller and with distinctive head pattern comprising of two dark lateral stripes over an otherwise pale crown. Presense also detected by bubbling call, usually comprising seven notes descending slightly in pitch from start to finish.

Habitat:

Found on coasts. Widespread passage migrant. Winters in small numbers.

The stripes over the eyes and head and two dark bands over the crown (see middle picture) suggest a Whimbrel. Slender-billed have less than 50 adults on the Siberian breeding grounds and are believed to winter in Eastern Europe. None have been recorded in Western Europe for many years since they were hunted to extinction.
