Description:

Fantastic similar (same) mushroom as the one growing on a huge broken branch of the birch tree. This is attached to a still living part of the same tree. (Over 4 inches long)

Habitat:

Woodlands in the Poconos

Notes:

It really helped to take a photo of the underside of this fungi to confirm ID suggested by Mick and Alex.

take a look at the fam: phellinus (the fire-tonder- mushroom)
This bracket fungus could be Phellinus igniarius (Can grow to 25cm top getting dark with age) ?
Is there a fungi expert in the House? This was so cool! Another larger one too. Help! Thanks so much!
