Description:

Formerly considered a subspecies of the Grass Snake (Natrix natrix), it was found to be a distinct species in 2016. It lacks the yellow patches behind the head, characteristic for Natrix. This specimen was about 1m long, grey/green in colour with black spots along the body. The picture the snake's defensive posture, with a puffed up body and a flattened head, hissing and pretending to strike.

Habitat:

Found among scrub in hilly country between the coast and mountains.
