Thanks Carol, unfortunatelly I dont have any ID for this one yet , I have been keeping its cocoon for 3 months so far but it looks like nothing is going to emerge from it
Well, it looks like a prominent caterpillar, in the family Notodontidae (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notodontidae). I'm not sure of anything more specific than that, but with great pictures like those, there's a pretty good chance we can narrow it down :)
E-mail me when you find the ID if you don't mind. I am so so curious. Can you send it to a university for ID in Costa Rica. Of course, unicorn. I was trying to think what it looked like; many times ID are so simple with the name.
I guess it could be related with a Schizura unicornis, it looks very similar but I could not find right ID http://www.pbase.com/ronnie_14187/image/44942751
It looks like a dragon head. There is a caterpillar in another area of the world called the dragon-headed caterpillar (Philippines) Maybe somehow related. I searched. It must be really rare.
I am stunned! There are no words. I couldn't even tell it was a caterpillar. Amazing! The creatures that are on this earth! This has got to be one of the strangest caterpillars yet. Certainly not available at your local Walmart pet department.
