Field Notes

Description:

I think this is a Cook Strait Giant Weta - certainly, it was larger than any other Weta that I've seen and they are found on Somes Island. It was about the right size. The Cook Strait Giant Weta is one of the largest insects in the World. They can reach up to 7cm (2.8in) in length

Habitat:

Normally found in grassland, scrubland and forest edges.
