Field Notes

Description:

An army of voracious caterpillars at various stages of development (including eggs) ravaging several leaves of a beach mahogany tree.

Habitat:

Observed on this beach mahogany (Calophyllum inophyllum) http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/705... in a large semi-urban yard & garden, and near a patch of disturbed remnant forest.

Notes:

If this doesn't make you cringe (beginning on 3rd photo)...

They're back, and in force (see the previous spotting http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7067733 )

Thanks! All of these photos were taken at the same time so luckily we get to see the developmental stages of various egg clutches during one spotting session instead of having to come back day after day. :-)
Great photos... so interesting to watch them develop.
That first photo makes them look like gummy worms! The eggs are amazingly arranged, so symmetrically. Are those "hairs" bad for people to touch? I'm thinking that anything that is so plentiful must be a feast for some animal out there.
Thanks Mick. I have no idea. I planted the tree. It is a Papua native but perhaps exotic to my neighborhood ;-)
Locals use any methods against them?
