As to your other question - while monarchs, like many species, are suffering from habitat loss and the effects of climate change, they are not officially endangered... though their numbers are definitely declining. Also, I heard the Monarchs were going extinct. And I thought I was seeing them everywhere though, and it was actually these I saw. Any knowledge about the Monarchs status?
This is a really tricky ID to make in the field unless you're familiar with them, but this is definitely a Viceroy butterfly, because of the black line across the lower wing. The Viceroy mimics the monarch for protection.
