Hmm...looks like it could be a firefly (Lampyridae), since the head is covered by the pronotum. If not a firefly, maybe another beetle in the superfamily Elateroidea.
I think the piedish beetles (they are flightless and the elytra are fused together) are endemic to Australia only and yours is unlikely to be this. Piedish beetle is only one of many different darkling beetles.
