Field Notes

Description:

This is a close up photo of a fungi located inside the middle of a tree trunk (dead asian maple tree of sort) that I have let disintegrate on its own, finally lost the one and only branch left last month, mother nature helped it come to the ground, still the truck stands, and there are young trees growing around the mother tree trunk - the photo was taken June 2011, odd looking, some of the trees in my neighborhood are 100 years old. I do not know exactly how old the dead tree is that has this fungi that looks like a living creature to me.

Species ID Suggestions

mock oyster or orange oyster

Phyllotopsis nidulans

i think . saarbrigger nailed the right direction, even if it not really good to see. have you such rubber-gloves at home (because i would not suggest to pick up an unidentfied mushroom/fungi), then you could pick one (take the biggest, oldest --- most likely, that he has already released his spores, so if this is an oyster, you can let the offspring tribe there) , and make some additional pictures of the stem/gills and the whole shape of the "supected oyster". good luck it's your decision !!
Welcome Yvette. The fungi looks for me like a sort of oyster. I proposed a typ, but the picture makes it dificult for me to find the right ID.
