Field Notes

Description:

This spotting was inspired by the interesting thread of comments on one of my recent posts: American sweetgum (fruit and fall foliage) http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7836800 My sincere thanks to "KristalWatrous" -- pollination biologist and PN spotter extraordinaire -- for providing the botanical definition of the word "fruit." Note: The quarters used to show the relative size of the fruit specimens are approximately one inch (~1") in diameter.

Habitat:

Landscape planting in a green space between commercial buildings.

The seeds had probably already dispersed since the holes in the fruits have opened. Here's a botanical drawing that shows what the seeds should look like: http://delta-intkey.com/angio/images/altin411.gif.
Happy Thanksgiving, Kristal! I cut one of the pieces of "fruit" in half. The inside of the fruit looks like a honeycomb; I didn't see anything that looks like a seed. What am I missing?
