Field Notes

Description:

Medium-sized beetle about 5/8 inches long. with metallic green head and thorax. The elytra (wing covers) are a metallic copper.

Habitat:

Urban yards.

Notes:

Originates in Japan but was accidently introduced into the U.S. in 1916. It has become a pest in eastern U.S. where it consumes up to 200 different species of plants. Larvae live in the soil feeding on roots and can cause problems in lawns.
