Field Notes

Description:

Found in pairs or family groups floating with head down on coral dropoffs and rock faces along coastal reefs, usually close to soft coral or sea grass. They feed on small crustaceans.

The ghost pipefish's color varies from place to place in order to blend in with their surroundings.

Habitat:

Found near soft coral, barrel sponges, or feather stars. Widespread in the Indo-Pacific region.

Notes:

I'm posting two different pipefish here because they were together where we found them.

Wow, fantastic! They look so delicate and elegant.
There are also white-colored ghost pipefish -- those shimmer in the water!
