Field Notes

Description:

Black woodpecker with white head. This is the only species of bird in North America that has a white head and black body so it's easy to identify. The baby was calling while in the nest made by the parents who pecked a hole in a dead, burnt tree. This baby has a little orange coloring on its head as seen in the third image. The mom returned to feed the baby about every 5 minutes. I didn't see the dad.

Habitat:

Along a trail with Giant Sequoia, cedar, oak and pine at Yosemite National Park.

Notes:

This woodpecker eats the seeds of pinecones
