Field Notes

Description:

Winged Elm is a very common medium-sized early-succesional tree, most found in a wide range of habitats, from old fields to bottomlands to rock outcrops. Corky wings on the branches and trunk may be as pronounced as on this tree, or may be nearly absent. The bark of a young tree often has amazing corky wings and warts.

Notes:

I had absolutely no idea what this was until Anna ID'd it for me!

Thanks Anna! I learn something new every day on this site!
Some elm species have "corky wings". I think these look like a normal part of the bark. Try rock elm or winged elm.
