Field Notes

Description:

A small species of spiny orb-weaver spider found throughout northern Papua (and elsewhere?). The spines and "carapace" also gives rise to the common group name of "crab-like orb-weaver spider" although they are not closely related to the crab spiders.

Habitat:

This spotting in a large semi-urban yard & garden situated next to a disturbed patch of remnant forest.

Notes:

For a spotting of the same species some 270 km to the west see http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/6903278. It has also been observed a similar distance to the east http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/photo/papuan-spider-royalty-free-imag….
