Field Notes

Description:

One of the largest terrestrial true bugs. This one was 38 mm (1 1/2 inches) and other sightings of wheel bugs that were larger. Wheel shaped armor (cool!) and dangerous beak called a rostrum. Don't handle! But these are beneficial bugs preying on our PA stink bugs and nymphs that our harmful to our vegetation.

Habitat:

On the back of the house near the deck in the Poconos, 20 yards from the woods, but 50 yard from the meadow.

Notes:

This wheel bug had better coloring than most. Take a look at its "injector". If it pierces your skin, it could take up to six months to heal.

I'm not sure I have ever seen one. I can't wait to get bit because I heard it's awesome!
I love these guys too!
Yes, one of my favorites! I have about 3 other wheel bug sightings posted here and still have more to post. I never saw a wheel bug until this past August.
Great shots! This is my favorite insect in the world, simply fantastic.
