Of the three species your weevil resembles in Zimmerman, I'd say it most resembles Talaurinus impressicollis Macleay. The size of the tubercles on the pronotum and the texture between the elytral striae are pretty much the same.

Hi Martin, I checked your weevil against the photos in Zimmerman's Weevils of Australia (vol. 4, pp. 327, 335 and 337. The photos are of males, which are narrower, but the raised elytral striae, tubercular pronotum and deeply grooved yet short rostrum are all consistent with your specimen. Do you live anywhere near a major insect collection (university or CSIRO in Canberra, for example)? This is definitely a case where I'd recommend comparing the specimen against identified ones in a collection. But since this is such a large weevil, it might be well known among weevil folks in your part of the world. Sending your photos to CSIRO may produce an ID as well. Good luck!
