Field Notes

Description:

Banded in black and yellow, with clear wings (lacking scales), white bands on its antennae. About 1 centimeter long.

Habitat:

Forest

Notes:

This is a wasp mimic moth in the family Sessiidae, also known as the clearwing moths. This species uses willow trees (Salix sp.) as its host: the larvae burrow into the plant and develop inside.

There's not much information online about this species, but the closest match I've been able to find so far has been this species. I would like to get a copy of the publication that talks about it and has been cited by many places online and in the published literature, but it's tough to get ahold of. If you find "A Guide to the Clearwing Borers (Sesiidae) of the North Central United States, North Central Regional Publication No. 394," let me know!
