Description:

A smallish heron of the southeastern United States, the Little Blue Heron breeds in various freshwater and estuarine habitats. It is the only heron species in which first-year birds and adults show dramatically different coloration: first-year birds are pure white, while adults are blue.

Looks like a juvenile little blue heron to me. Like ebsharrett pointed out the legs are not black and neither is the bill.

Snowy egrets have black legs and solid black bills. Could be a little blue juvenile.

@Jamie - thanks - I believe you are right. I assumed it was a 'little' but after researching I see you are most likely correct. Next visit to Assateague I'll remember this and be able to identify better! Thanks again and the info is corrected!
