Field Notes

Description:

A young green-colored walking stick.
It is about 3 cm from forehead to the tip of it's abdomen.
It's body has small yellow spots.
This one is a female probably.
This species has wings to fly.
It's eyes look very beautiful and unique.

Habitat:

Forest of Kinabalu National Park, Kundasang, Sabah, Malaysia.

Notes:

Another Phasmida insect species that I have spotted in Kinabalu Park.
Sorry for some of the slightly blurred photo.

Oh yes, martinl, I realized that too that it's wings are still not yet capable of flight.

I have seen some species that start off as a green juvenile and matured into brown adults. I'm not sure whether this will grow up and turn brown.

Hey chun, very nice discovery! There are lots of different stick insects and they can look very different as nymphs. The wings you noticed are pro wings meaning it is not an adult yet. During its next molt it will probably have full sized wings and be capable of flight. Based on the tip of the abdomen, I will guess it is female.

I bet it is, it's exoskeleton isn't as hard as a rhinoceros beetle nor does it have any other defence mechanism so these insects under the Phasmida order usually turn to camouflage and mimicry vegetation to keep themselves safe. I have seen them playing dead too trying to fool me.

Agree with Emma..Great spotting .. I get to see only the brown version of this here.. But, the green stick insect looks really nice ...

great spotting. looks like a very fragile insect. Could be easily injured.
