Field Notes
Description:
Tennessee is in the process of being colonized by Pyrgus albescens (White Checkered-Skipper), a species that is indistinguishable from P. communis (Common Checkered-skipper) in the field; only microscopic examination of the valves (genitalia) or DNA testing can be used to determine species.
Notes:
This appears to be the only species of butterfly still flying in our yard. :(
