Field Notes

Description:

This is "frog spit" from a froghopper. "The froghoppers, or the superfamily Cercopoidea, are a group of Hemipteran insects, in the suborder Auchenorrhyncha. Families in the suborder are best known for the nymph stage, which produces a cover of frothed-up plant sap resembling spit; the nymphs are therefore commonly known as spittlebugs." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Froghopper

Habitat:

This was spotted on goldfussia (Strobilanthes sp.) in a large semi-urban yard & garden next to a disturbed patch of remnant forest.

Hi SFrazier! I got a little curious this past summer & opened up some "spit" to find the bug inside. Thought you might like to see my spotting. projectnoah.org/spottings/6382841
