Field Notes

Description:

I accidentally dug up this little guy (girl?) while searching for grubs. His carapace is about 1 1/2" in length by about 1" across. He has relatively flat carapace with a highly-defined ridge running longitudinally. He cannot withdraw his head & limbs completely (as a box turtle can). He has a relatively long tail (maybe 1/2" or more).

Habitat:

Buried in sandy soil @ the perimeter of a partially deciduous, partially coniferous forest.

Notes:

His right eye is not open. I'm wondering if he is still in the final stages of phylogenetic development. Also wondering if his "beak" is so pointed bc its purpose was to extricate the turtle/tortoise from its egg or if it is an immature Snapping Turtle.
