Field Notes

Description:

Males are large and black with a long fan-shaped tail, large bill, and iridescent purple sheen. Females are identical in stature, but yellow-brown in coloration. Iris color varies on geographical location. Birds on the Gulf Coast and inland Florida have dark irises and Atlantic individuals have pale irises. Very noisy; a common sound heard in coastal parks and seaside resorts.

Adult male; very tame, eating peanuts from my hand.
