People catching them as pets and being unable to feed them(ants are their primary preferred food). Lack of food due to poisoning the supply. Habitat destruction. Climate change
Used to see a lot of "horny toads" in pet shops back then, too. Never did see one in the wild. Wonder what lead to their scarcity. The ones I remember must not have been this "eastern short horned" variety; this guy has quite a big head in relation to his body.
I remember when horned lizards(or horny toads as they were called) were very common. Used to find them in the neighborhood as a young child in California. Before I reached high school, they'd become scarce
