Great Cormorant
Phalacrocorax carbo
51.8898, 0.901235
Field Notes
Description:
A large, black bird that is found close to water. Has a very sleek appearance, yellow at the base of its hooked bill, and green eyes. Often found holding its wings out to dry them off. Their feathers are not waterproof so that air does not stay trapped in them and the birds are able to dive. They are excellent fishers.
Habitat:
Mainly coastal areas, estuaries or lagoons, but also found near inland reservoirs or lakes.
Notes:
There are a pair of cormorants that stop by the lakes at the University of Essex campus every once in a while, and one of them enjoys sitting on the signpost in the lake.
