This looks like a Christmas beetle
Yes martin, very similar but the one I saw wasn't as hairy and evil looking as the one of the brisbane website! haha.. This one also is much more vibrant.
Thanks for the help, I have no idea what it is. Gonna do a lil research :)
The closest beetle that I know is Spotted Flower Chafer http://www.brisbaneinsects.com/brisbane_scarabs/SpottedFlowerChafer.htm but yours would have to be a very dark form with dots joining. I suspect the pattern is too different to be a match.
