Field Notes

Description:

clams about six inches across; evocative of "giant clam," but hardly big enough to merit that description; may be juveniles of Tridacna gigas, though apparently north of usual range

Habitat:

shallow water sub-tropical coral reef flat

Notes:

spotted in water less than 40 feet deep off west coast of Okinawa; actually two separate spottings; date notional, but 1980 certain and June probable; location probable, but certainly between Bolo Point (Zanpa Misaki) and Naha; original media photoprints, probably taken with Nikonos III using close-up kit with flash; prints subsequently scanned and images saved as digital files
