Field Notes

Description:

A lactarius of some sort. I was going to guess candy caps as the odor was sweetish, almost but not quite maple-y. However, the "latex" was a thicker white than is usually described. See broken cap in photo

One year I had a huge spread of these - or similar - all over the lawn. But my local guy was out collecting commercially and didn't get to see them alive. My dried ones didn't have as much maple smell as his, but there are variations in several related species
Found some earlier today that look like these (on the Olympic Peninsula); will give them a closer look tomorrow and see if something comes up.
I have some of these posted that I have been having a terrible time identifying because they are fully mature. I was thinking lactarius too, but none fit with the orage cap and stipe.
