Field Notes

Description:

Identification: Large (wingspan 120 mm), with huge clear eyespots, each entirely and clearly circled in yellow; those on fore wings elongate. Wings brown or reddish brown speckled with white, wing margins with complex light brown markings. Abdomen banded in white. Legs and antennae orange. Larvae milky white with hairy blue spots.

Habitat:

Subtropical bushveld and forest.

Notes:

Biology: Larvae eat Croton sylvaticus (forest fever-berry), Helinus ovatus ( genus of flowering plants in the family Rhamnaceae) and Zizyphus mucronata (buffalo thorn).
Related species: One of 4 species in the genus, yellow circling o eyespots incomplete in the other species. relative of the world's largest (Asian) moths.
