Description:

Chiton loose from the rocks.

Habitat:

Spotted at La Jolla Shores during low tide.

Notes:

The fifth picture looks like it's being eaten away by tiny organisms.
The last picture is the largest I've ever seen with each 'scale' the size of my pinky nail.

Thanks, I figured because all the crabs I've been uploading are arthropods, other shelled organisms could be the same. It was so neat having found a chiton that was off the rocks so that I could see what was underneath.

Nice series! I think this should be in the 'other' category rather than 'arthropods' though.

I think the beauty of Project Noah is that a lot of people are coming to that very conclusion as the take photos and upload them, either via cell phone or computer. I've been looking up my "spottings" using field guides ever since my mom bought me a bunch of Golden Field Guides when I was about 3. I'm delighted to see others using the internet to do the same thing

Thanks Karen. I see them all the time, but never knew what they were until I did some quick research. It's amazing seeing these things all your life and then finally learning something about them. The sea has many amazing things living in it.
