Buttonbushes
Cephalanthus sp.
38.7512, -77.1068
Field Notes
Description:
"They are shrubs or small trees growing to 5–15 m (16–49 ft) tall. The leaves are simple, arranged in opposite pairs or whorls of three. The flowers form a dense globular inflorescence." Source Credit: Wikipedia. Buttonbushes appear to be attractive to many species of butterflies. Editor's Note: I shot the photos using an iPhone 3GS camera that does not perform very well in high-contrast light, that is very bright- and very dark light. Notice how the white flowers in direct sunlight are "blown out" (color saturated) in the photos.
Habitat:
Huntley Meadows Park, a 1,425 acre wetland area in Fairfax County, Virginia USA. Related Resource: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/huntley/
