Field Notes

Description:

Not positive, but I think it's a Little Brown Bat. Maybe someone out there can give me some help.

Habitat:

High altitude Rocky Mountains, very near Yellowstone Lake, Wyoming

Notes:

We saw this little guy flying around and above us at an intersection about 30 feet from the Lake. He stayed near and flew as low as 6 feet above us to over 25 feet above us. We saw him late in the afternoon (5:00PM) but still in bright daylight. Being the nerds we are, we had our bat detector with us, and it was clicking like mad while he echo-located his prey

Please consider adding this spotting to the new North American Bat Tracker mission at http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/18306114
JT, our bat detector has a Hi and Low frequency setting - it was set to Hi when we saw this fellow. He/she was very handsome and very active, we probably watched for a half hour or more. Thanks for posting!
Great in-flight photos! Since you had your bat detector with you, at what kHz were you getting clicks? If it was near 25 kHz, I would want to think it's a Silver-haired bat, a species commonly found in high altitude alpine forests.
