Field Notes

Description:

Strange spiral trees. A lot of types of pine trees mostly. I was concentrating on the unusual fungi, so I only got two series of trees.

Habitat:

Woodlands of Beltzville State Park, Pohopoco Creek, Sawmill Trail

The vine could be a bittersweet, either American (Celastrus scandens) or Oriental (Celastrus orbiculatus). I've seen them make thick woody stems like the ones climbing your trees. The two species are hard to tell apart without the leaves. Here's a photo of a woody oriental bittersweet: http://www.mvr.usace.army.mil/coralville/invasivespeciesmanagementtest.htm.
No leaves on the tree, but I thought to get a photo of the leaves on the ground!
definately a type of vine that has strangled the host tree. not sure without pictures of the leaves. Very cool though.
