Field Notes

Description:

Photo 1 shows Callery pear tree fruit and fall foliage. "Each fertilized flower produces a single globoid fruit (a pome) about 1/3–1/2" across. The exterior of a mature fruit is light brown with pale dots, while its fleshy interior contains about 2 seeds. Usually, the flavor of the fruit is bitter." Source Credit: EOL. Photos 2-3 show a Callery pear tree leaf, identified in situ using "Leafsnap" app for Apple iOS mobile devices. Next year, I plan to photograph this tree's phenology from flowers to fruit. Photos 4-5 show Callery pear flowers and fruit (screen captures from the "Leafsnap" species images library).

Habitat:

Landscape planting in a residential community, Fairfax County, Virginia USA.
