Field Notes

Description:

These lettuce plants are a couple of years old and are going to seed. The plant's with the flowers are about 5 feet tall and have a bunch of yellow flowers and flower buds. The leaves are a lot smaller than the newer lettuce plants that have larger leaves on the bottom of their stalks.

Habitat:

The lettuce is planted in the school garden and gets full sun.

Notes:

This plant was chosen by a 5th-grade group at John G (The Pink Butterflies). These are the questions based on their observations:

1. Why are the flowers yellow?
2. We saw a very small white bug and a jumping spider on the plant. What is the jumping spider doing?
3. Are jumping spiders pollinators?

Comments (2)

Those jumping spiders are really cool. Did you know spiders eat insects? 😳 Do you think that helps or hurts the plant? Just jumping in there could help spread the pollen, How? What makes a good pollinator? Do you think a spider can plinate a plant?
🌼 color is determined by the DNA of the plant, but a plants color evolved to be as attractive as possible to the insects that will pollinate it. Some insects can only see certain colors, so a plant needs to be seen by the insects in order to get some attention (moving the pollen around).
