Yes if its like other flies, they have loose pupae and I expect it will fall to the ground. I am surprised that I never notice other larvae since the hoverflies are common.
Amazing ID work Martin :) A bit of a messy eater (like most babies I guess). I wonder where it will pupate... maybe drop to the soil below.
I discovered this larva is a hoverfly
Argy; my Chinese translation app. couldn't find a meaning for it so its possibly purely aesthetic. I thought this was a caterpillar but there were too many anomalies. An expert on flickr ID'd it for me as a fly.
What's that chinese writing on its back martin ?
