Field Notes

Description:

These medium sized turtles (to 6 inches) have a flattish shell with a pair of keels running nearly the full length of the carapace. The carapace is dark brown or black with light orange spots between the keels The top of the head is also orange, getting darker with age.

Habitat:

They are found across the northern areas of the Amazon rainforest of SE Ecuador frequenting rivers, streams and swamps.

Notes:

These three were found near shore in the early morning and the picture taken with a flash. Returning later, they were still within sight.
