Field Notes

Description:

Balkan trapdoor spiders (Cyrtocarenum) are a genus of trapdoor spiders endemic to the Balkans. Like other trapdoor spiders, they make burrows with an trapdoor, which opens slightly at night to let the spider catch its prey. This one is a juvenile, but I've found burrows of some adult ones around the area.

Habitat:

Semi-arid.

I agree with your comment, John B. It was just my mistake. I also replaced the word "Greece" with "the Balkans". Thanks for noticing that.
Hi again Hi ArisL, Since my last comment, just a few minutes ago, I have been thinking about your spider and what I am about to suggest might be even less correct than your statement that the genus Cyrtocarenum is endemic to Greece, but it might be possible. What do you think? - Is the Balkan Trapdoor Spider endemic to the "Balkans". I think that would be more appropriate and it could just be tnat Wiki has stated it awkwardly. If you were to replace "Greece" with "The Balkans", I don't think anyone could put up an argument against that. I'll be interested to know if you agree.
Hi ArisL, I am not a spider expert, I am just very interested in spiders. Perhaps you would be interested to look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyrtocarenum_cunicularium... In this article. Wiki says that Cyrtocarenum cunicularium is present in Turkey as well as Greece. If that is correct, then it can't be endemic to Greece. If you are sure that Wiki is wrong, then it would be good to provide a reference. If I don't know if you are right or Wikipedia is right, how can I learn. Sorry for being such a pest, but I'm sure you will agree that we all want to learn as much as we can from Project Noah. So, we should try to be accurate as we can, or just say that we are are not sure so that no one gets misled. Bye the way, your spottings are really interesting. Thank you.
