Field Notes

Description:

Large seed, tan in color, 6" length, 4" height, 2 " thick. The skin feels like leather. It appears it has started to sprout. When gently squeezed it feels spongy. I though it might be a pod with a bunch of seeds inside, but I think this is a single seed. I pictured it with a 750ml bottle of Olive Oil to give you a true perspective on how large this thing is.

Habitat:

I found it on the beach. Most likely traveled by sea.

Species ID Suggestions

Alcornoque, Mangle nato, Mora, Nato, Pracouba

http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/7792444 Check this posting out..
@ Nicholas ,hello and great to see you as always! yes it was a matter of speech.I agree . :))
It was just a way of saying where did it come from.. a matter of speech..agreed.
or could most likely be what Anna suggested?
@ Nicholas, this did not drop from a tree. My feeling is that some fruit was eaten and this pod left behind. Could be a mango tree?
So whats the plant or tree which this one dropped from Emma?
Have you ever eaten a mango? A mango can have a large seed pod. However this large seed pod has only one large seed. We usually roast this seed in the oven and eat it.
I would consider a tropical soil mix..(Store bought) which tends to drain well.. large pot with gravel on the bottom and plant the seed with the sprout facing up.. Just cover the seeds loosely with the soil.. water yourself sparingly, since the seeds have all the moisture they need to germinate in them.. that's why they are that large.. (for most plants)..Leave the sprout just proud of the soil.. heat and light is paramount and keep it away from rain storm water.. Its not the exact thing to do, but its a good start. Regards,
I think this image of Mora megistosperma matches yours http://www.seabean.com/locations/CostaRica/jpg/Mora_megistosperma_large.jpg
I have it in some water right now. any suggestions on how I should care for it. I am going to bring it to a local farmer and see if they know what it is. I will keep you posted.
Big seed pod, giant tree!! Give it some room and tropical soil and see what happens.. Love to see some time lapse sequences..
Wow! Be interested to know what this is and where it is likely to have come from
