Field Notes

Description:

Collared doves are a pale, pinky-brown grey colour, with a distinctive black neck collar (as the name suggests). They have deep red eyes and reddish feet. Their monotonous cooing will be a familiar sound to many of you. Although you'll often see them on their own or in pairs, flocks may form where there is a lot of food available.

Habitat:

Just about anywhere, but often around towns and villages. They're common visitors to gardens.

It's amazing how nature adapts! I was very pleased to fing this fellow in my garden as we don't see that many up in the Outer Hebrides.
I used to have a pair that nested under my porch light every year in the UK. I used to watch them spend days flying back & forth with twigs which they dropped it the cup below the light only to fall to the ground - eventually they used to give up & the female would lay her eggs directly into the 3" diameter cup! They successfully raised many broods this way though I doubt it could have been a comfortable nest for the chicks!
