Description:

A small pale shorebird of open sandy beaches and alkali flats, the Piping Plover is found along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, as well as inland in the northern Great Plains. Because of disturbance by people, all populations are considered endangered or threatened. Cornell Lab
#4 Photo compares with Snowy Plover (front)

Habitat:

Sandy Shore: Siesta Key FL

Notes:

A Note re: data
Thank you for your report and excellent photos. In the second photo I can see
an orange band on the upper left leg. This and the metal band on the upper
right leg means the plover was banded on the Great Lakes. This makes it a
rarity among a rare species. Overall the piping plover population is
estimated at around 6,000 adults, of which a little more than 100 breed on
the Great Lakes, primarily on Lake Michigan. I will forward your report to
the Great Lakes researchers and they should be able to send you additional
information on the plover. Thanks again.
