Field Notes

Description:

This is a Blood Lily. It is extremely rare to see this flower in the Andean region. After doing an extensive research , I came to the conclusion that it was the only specimen in Venezuela. The plant is originally from Africa, so it blew my mind when I saw it flowering in the wilderness (at 8200 ft above sea level). During 4 years, the plant only bloomed once, and just for one week. Scadoxus is a genus of only 9 species native to tropical Africa in the family Amaryllidaceae. This plant is also called Fireball Lily because of the spherical structure made by more than one hundred small red flowers.

Habitat:

Mérida, Venezuela - but originally from Africa.
