Description:

Male has the more striking markings: black and white. The female is a dull brown with a small white stripe on her head

Habitat:

IN a pond in the middle of a residential neighborhood near the ocean

Notes:

The smallest diving duck in N America, nests in Canada and the far northern states, wintering throughout the US. This pair in S Oregon

these look cute because of there size, We have at least 12 of them now.
I'm pretty sure the darker one is a female
These are very excellent under water swimmers!! The darker one is a juvenile? or is it a female?They love to drift away on the water.
