Field Notes

Description:

This butterfly was raised from caterpillar, because in the wild, parasitoid wasps kill them. The passion butterfly is a bright orange butterfly in the subfamily Heliconiinae of the family Nymphalidae. Passion butterflies have a chemical defense mechanism, as adults, in which they release odorous chemicals in response to predator sightings. As a result, common predators learn to avoid this species.

Habitat:

The caterpillars I raised were found in my garden in Fort Worth, Texas.

Notes:

The butterfly was released that morning, after it dried it's wings.
