Description:

The bright red berries were almost all that remained of this jack-in-the pulpit I spotted on the bank next to a trail. The spathe that once surrounded the spadix (which is now thickened and covered in berries) is shriveled and just barely visible at the base of the cluster. The fruits of this species ripen in late summer and fall, turning from green to red before the plants go fully dormant.
