Drywood Termite
Coptotermes acinaciformis
-37.9027, 145.33
Field Notes
Description:
Like white ants with many varied body types according to community function.
Habitat:
Open dry sclerophyll forest. Inside dead eucalyptus tree base.
Notes:
When one of our eucalyptus trees died and got pushed over this ball rolled out of the base of the tree. It was almost the diameter of the inside of the trunk. It was also void of termites, made of very thin walls of what feels like paper but is possibly a mache of plant material. It's very fragile.
There's a good chance the owners were these... http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/11329637
