Field Notes

Description:

Red and white mottled nudibranch ~ 2.5 cm long.

Habitat:

Near shore tropical waters; coral reef ecosystem.

Notes:

Spotted off of Leeward Oahu. Month and day are notional; year is known to be correct. Synonym: Goniobranchus tinctorius. Original medium was photoprint, taken with Nikonos III using close-up kit and flash; print subsequently scanned and image saved as digital file.

Thanks Moara. I thought I had posted a comment similar to what follows at the time I updated my spotting with your ID; apparently not. I agree with C. tinctoria. I've checked a couple of sites beyond the one you cited and found pics of C. tinctoria almost identical to mine. Meanwhile, C. petechialis is reported to have a "creamy straw-coloured background" which my spotting lacks.
I'm pretty sure that this is Chromodoris tinctoria, although it's close enough to the (thought to be extinct) Chromodoris petechialis that it would be a good idea to send your photo to a Nudibranch expert. http://www.seaslugforum.net/find/chropete Could be an exciting find!
